As part of an interview process I was asked to do a design review of three existing screens in a financial planning tool used by financial advisors, focusing on what I liked, what I thought could be improved, and how I would approach doing so.

“This was a good presentation showing that you are clearly an experienced individual and the time spent as a Product Owner / Analyst adds to the ability to think about the realities of a project. The feedback on our current screens was logical and thorough, a good eye for detail and clearly a lot of effort went into the preparation (so thank you!)”
- Joshua Knight, Head of Product -
To assess each screen I first captured my initial impressions and performed a comparison against common usability heuristics.
By reviewing the company’s website, blog, events page, and product training videos online I gained a deeper understanding of their brand and how the product functioned to add context to my assessment.
Finally, to give a wider perspective on the product I gathered user feedback from three non-UX professionals, asking them to provide me with their initial impressions, if they could identify the different elements on the screen, what they think they would do first, and what they think is most important. Given the tight turnaround required I focused this purely on the product home screen.
When explaining how I would approach improving these screens I felt it was important to emphasise the incorporation of research based on real user behaviour and include the insights and opinions of those who had been working on the product for longer, e.g. developers and product owners.
By collaborating with other experts, delivering iteratively and using A/B testing techniques to assess the performance of different solutions this would provide quicker wins and earlier feedback to help move the product in the right direction.
Thank you for taking the time to review this project. Any feedback is always appreciated.
Equally, if you have a project you'd like to work on together do please get in touch.
